No mariner experience is needed, and you don’t need to have been a crewman or sailor of any type.
Of course, we are always looking for experienced mariners and steam engineers.
Mariners-by-trade and landlubbers alike are always welcome.
Each individual works when they can work, and they do the work they choose to do.
We do have crew work days on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, but if you can’t work on those days, you can work on the days that fit your schedule.
Work around and with steam turbine engine under the supervision of the Chief Engineer.
Escorting guests and groups around the museum and telling the history of the ship and American Merchant Marine. Under supervision of the Lead Docent.
Work with ship's electrical systems under supervision of Chief Engineer.
Under supervision of the Chief Steward, prepares food for crew and guests for special events and work days. Crew mess usually operates for lunch every Wednesday and on the second Saturday of the month.
Painting, maintenance, cargo handling, lifeboat training. Under supervision of Boatswain Mate.
Work in ships Gift Shop during ships operating hours. Sales, inventory control, work cash register, under supervision of Gift Shop Manager.
Working on wood repairs and projects giving out by Boatswain Mate.
Working in two museums, cleaning and changing displays, inventory of artifacts. Working under the Museum Curator.
Greeting guests and controlling access to the vessel. Work shifts made up by Gangway Supervisor and Chief Security Officer.
Making and painting signs for various areas of the ship as needed.
General office work,answer phones, mailing,filing working under Office Manager.
Working ship security and safety at all special events,movie shoots, etc. Understanding Maritime Law and procedures under supervision of the Chief Security Officer.
However, no perk can match the satisfaction of knowing you are on a team of outstanding people who maintain and perpetuate the legacy of individuals who risked their lives in times of need, to preserve the world as a better place for mankind and to assist in defending those unable to defend themselves!
Volunteers with 200 or more hours of service become members of the “Working Crew” and are eligible to work the summer cruises, when we are cruising, with the approval of their respective department head.
