Formed during the closing years of World War II, the United States Merchant Marine Veterans of World War II (USMMVWWII) is a nationwide, tax-exempt, non-profit organization. Our aim is to memorialize the accomplishments and sacrifices of the U.S. Merchant Mariners during times of war and peace throughout our nation's history and to inspire future generations of American mariners. We extend a hearty welcome to all men, women and children who are interested in the following programs and activities:
To continue our educational program about the role the merchant marine played during times of conflict as well as in peacetime commerce.
To improve the scope of recognition and benefits for Merchant Marine Veterans, and to assist them in getting up-to-date information and applications for all benefits and awards due them.
To promote a stronger american merchant marine industry.
The continuing maintenance, restoration, and operation of the S.S. Lane Victory as a living museum and memorial.
To provide a nationwide forum for communication and fellowship for all merchant seamen, active or retired, Naval Armed Guard personnel, and for all interested associates and well-wishers.
All members will receive a certificate of membership, a Membership card, our monthly publication, The Anchor Light, free admission to the S.S. Lane Victory while in port, and notices of special events.
Annual dues for membership in the USMMVWWII is $36 for full members and $28 for (non-voting) associate members. Associate members will be awarded full membership after a two year probationary period. Life Memberships are available for $500. Life members receive many benefits, along with a beautiful hand-engraved certificate and a special membership card. The spouses of Life Members are included in memberships.
All revenue generated from the life memberships go toward the constant restoration and refurbishing of the ship. All workers in the USMMVWWII, including board members, staff, officers and crew, are volunteers whom receive no monetary compensation. The S.S. Lane Victory receives no financial support from the government, therefore, no tax money is used for the maintenance or operation of the ship. The ship welcomes any support offered by private and public institutions in as well as from individuals.
Our general meetings are open to the public and are held the 2nd Saturday of the month in the main museum aboard the S.S. Lane Victory. The meetings start at 10:00 AM and generally end around 12:00. An abreviated work day generally begins after lunch and runs until 3:00 PM. Those interested in membership and/or volunteer opportunities are encouraged to attend one or more general meetings where board members and staff officers are available to answer questions.
